Musaic: A Chamber Music Marathon. Co-presented by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (Jeffrey Kahane, Music Director) and UCLA Live. Royce Hall, Los Angeles, CA.
Surf's up! Chamber surf, that is, with wave upon wave of gloriously spectacular chamber music, as many of Southern California's very best musicians, with guests from around the country, performed for 20 hours across two days at UCLA's Royce Hall. The music ranged from such familiars as Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert to Ingolf Dahl, Taneyev, and Schnittke. The common thread was the highest imaginable level of quality, and the enthusiastic audience rewarded the performers with standing ovations after nearly every piece.
The brilliant idea for such a unique presentation of chamber music belongs to Jeffrey Kahane - the music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra - who played the piano for some of the pieces, but other keyboard artists such as Robert Edward Thies and Orli Shaham also joined the marathon.
The pieces were played one after the other in a steady flow, with the audience able to come and go throughout each day. The ticket was like a daily pass. Every few hours, a longer break was taken to allow the audience to ask questions of the musicians who had just performed.
It is impossible to review such a kaleidoscope of 20 hours of music - and would be unfair to those not mentioned. All the musicians were relaxed and clearly enjoyed what they were performing. Simply stated, this was the most exciting chamber music I have ever heard!
Thank you, Meastro Kahane and all the performers.
