The
Riverside Symphonia
Caprio Young Artists Competition
The Riverside Symphonia announces its Fifth Biennial Caprio Young Artists Competition. This competition, held every other year, honors John-Michael Caprio, the founding conductor of the Riverside Symphonia, who passed away in 1997. In addition to his work as a conductor and as music director of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, Caprio was a former teacher who loved the mix of music and young people, whether it was exposing young listeners to classical music for the first time or working with talented young performers already preparing for their own musical careers. The Caprio Young Artists Competition is open to all non-keyboard instrumentalists who are 22 years old or younger who live or study in Pennsylvania or New Jersey. First round application deadline is January 6, 2006. Finalists will be selected to compete for the first prize of $2000 and the opportunity to perform with the Riverside Symphonia at one of its regular concerts during the 2006-2007 season. The second prize is $1000. This year's finals will take place on Sunday, March 26, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian church, Church and Union Streets, Lambertville, N.J.
The winner will be announced immediately after the competition. The winner of the competition held in 2004, flutist, Christina Ann Vigilante, 17, from Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, delighted the audience when she appeared with the full Riverside Symphonia the following season with her performance of Carmen Fantasy on the Themes of Bizet.
