A PROJECT REACHING 65 COMMUNITIES ACROSS ALL 50 STATES

Joan Tower Selected as First Composer for Project

OCEAN/MONMOUTH COUNTY, N.J. - In conjunction with the orchestra's 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Garden State Philharmonic partners with the American Symphony Orchestra League and Meet The Composer to present the New Jersey premiere of Joan Tower's Made in America as part of the groundbreaking project, Ford Made in America. Sixty-five orchestras, including at least one in each of the 50 states, have co-commissioned the new work by American composer Joan Tower.

Garden State Philharmonic Artistic Director & Conductor Anthony LaGruth is one of the original visionaries for this project-the largest consortium commission planned by American orchestras to give ensembles in smaller communities the capacity to premiere a new work by an established American composer of national repute.

"This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a nationwide project the first of its kind, created by regional orchestras for regional orchestras," Maestro LaGruth said. "Joan Tower is one of the preeminent composers of our generation and the Made in America piece is one of her first orchestral pieces in some time."

"We feel privileged to perform the New Jersey premiere of this work and bring this piece to life at our opening night 50th anniversary celebration," LaGruth added.

Ford Made in America is made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund.

This program is also generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art. Additional funding is provided by The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, JP Morgan Chase, and Argosy Foundation Contemporary Music Fund. The Garden State Philharmonic's performance is sponsored in part by funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts; the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders; Causeway Ford Family of Dealerships; and donations from the community.

The Performances The Garden State Philharmonic will perform the New Jersey premiere of Joan Tower's Made in America under direction of artistic director and conductor Anthony LaGruth at the orchestra's 50th Anniversary Celebration, on Saturday, October 15, 2005, at 8:00pm at the Strand Theatre in Lakewood. Concert early comers will also have the opportunity to participate in "Musically Speaking," a special pre-concert presentation featuring guest artist Joan Tower and the Orchestra's Artistic Director and Conductor, Anthony LaGruth, before the concert at 7:15 pm. This is a special introduction to and a chance to ask questions about the evening's musical program.

For concert tickets and more information, please contact the Garden State Philharmonic at 732.451.0064.

The subsequent 64 performances will take place through the 2005-06 and 2006-07 concert seasons, and will make Made in America the most-performed work by a living American composer. Please contact the Garden State Philharmonic for a complete list of participating orchestras.

The Consortium for orchestras with smaller budgets, commissioning and presenting a major new work by a nationally recognized composer can be difficult, due to budget constraints and limited staff resources. The collaborative nature of Ford Made in America provides the 65 participating orchestras the opportunity to pool resources in a vital national network, to achieve together what no one of them could afford to do individually in their own.
