Xylophone -
A mallet percussion instrument laid out in the configuration of a keyboard. The bars are made of wood which are typically struck with hard mallets. The effect is that of accented, bright, pitched percussion.

Zarzuela -
Spanish language folk-opera. These are written in all Spanish-speaking countries.

Zeno of Elea (fl. ca. 480 BCE) -
A philosopher who held that unity was self-contained. This thinking stretches into the artistic unities expected in the baroque period 1,500 years after his life.

Zeno liked to use paradox to make a point. His most famous states that Achilles will never catch a tortoise if it leaves before him because the distance between them is infinitely divisible.

Zimmermann's Coffee House -
A business in Leipzig during Bach's time. It had several floors which catered to various forms of entertainment such as billiards, cards, and music. It was in supplying the latter that Bach composed such secular works as his aptly named "Coffee Cantata."
